In many years of cooking and baking I’d never owned a stand mixer until last year when I asked for one for Christmas. My husband, the giver, wanted to get the Kitchen Aid but I suggested the less expensive Sunbeam, which I’d heard good things about. At first I thought my problems with it were caused by my inexperience with the stand mixer since I’d used a handmixer so long. But, no, it’s the mixer. One aggravation is that ingredients don’t get mixed in thoroughly without constantly stopping and mixing by hand. But the mixer’s worst fault–and the reason I know it’s a dud–is that at times the bowl just stops turning or the mixer itself stops. I have to turn the speed dial back and forth to make it start again and/or I have to spin the bowl by hand. Also, the tilt release button is in an awkward place and requires a serious push to make work. And once the beaters, though firmly seated, simply disengaged and fell into the bowl. Recently, I made meringue for pies with this mixer. It took twice as long as with a handmixer and the meringue was syrupy and did not have the volume I’m used to with a handmixer. And forget mixing bread with it. That was a complete disaster. I finished mixing and kneading the bread by hand.

I thought having a stand mixer would be so great, more efficient, convenient, freeing. But frankly, I hate this thing! I’m beyond disappointed. The shoddiness of this appliance, which was not cheap, is shameful. And from what I’ve read here, today’s Kitchen Aids, though very expensive, may not be much better. Whatever happened to quality products?

What is the best Stand Mixer for 2008?
I've used an old Sunbeam hand mixer for over 30 years. I'm ready to purchase a stand mixer. I've read so many different reviews on different brands of mixers I'm confused on sunbeam stand mixer which one to purchase.I don't need a fancy or the most expensive mixer because I'm just an ordinary baker. I'll use the mixer for cakes, cookies and different types of dishes. I would eventually try bread, but I think I'll need to get use to this type of machine before I venture into this project.I hope someone can tell me what brand is reasonable to buy and why.In your answer, please indicate the brand name and model!

If you can’t get the kitchen aid standmixer, this is probably the best choice. It’s cheap, strong, and dependable. I’ve used it to cook thick bread dough, naan, cookies, pizzas, you name it. Anything I throw at it comes out very well.

I bought this Sunbeam mainly because I needed a second heavy-duty mixer (my first is a Kitchen Aide) for my second home. Didn’t want to put out a ton of money, so I thought I’d give this one a try. It is really a neat mixer for the money, mixing my favorite fluffy white frosting mix perfectly. The only negative thing I have to say is about the mixing bowls. They are GREAT quality, but too heavy (1/4″ glass bowls). I’m a bit older and they are hard to handle, but this has nothing to do with the quality of the mixer. Long story short, it’s a GREAT buy for the money, and will stand up to any mixing task.

I was very impressed by the 12 speeds, and how quiet it is. Even my 4 year old likes to play with this one. I would recommend this to every one! It ROCKS!

I grew up with a Mixmaster and bought one myself many years ago. It performed flawlessly, although I never used the dough hooks or made cookie dough in it – most cookies are better made with a wooden spoon. It is a great mixer, and I don’t feel the need to get a huge expensive Cuisinart for 6 times the price – plus it’s harder to store.
My old mixer is still beautiful and looks brand new, but someone did not make sure the beater was all the way in and both beaters got a little bit bent. My husband fixed them, and it seemed just fine – until I used it and it didn’t sound right. I think the inside where you insert the inside beater is damaged and just not quite holding it right.
Sie la vie. It has served me for many many years and I’ll replace it with another. The whisks might come in handy for egg whites and mousse, although the beaters have worked just fine. I expect it will last as long as my first Mixmaster!

This is the little mixer that can. The motor isn’t all that strong, so if you are trying to mix some seriously sticky and thick dough, probably you should pull out a heavy duty machine. This is great for an everyday kind of mixer, whipping up mashed potatoes, a batch of cookies, whipped cream, dips, etc. It’s nice because it’s not that heavy to take out, it can be used as a stand or hand mixer, and it doesn’t take up that much space. I recently purchased this mixmaster again as its predecessor died after nearly a decade of service. The motor didn’t die on the old one, but something snapped in the opening that holds the beaters and one side just wouldn’t stay up anymore. It’s a good product as long as you don’t abuse it and perfect for the average cook.

No matter how hard you try, the tab on the stand that’s supposed to hold the mixer won’t do it’s job, and no amount of wiggling will get it to snap into place. The mixer just falls off the stand.

The mixer itself works really well, but there’s no reason to buy this thing for the stand and bowl.

I am enjoying my Sunbeam heritage mixer. The design is excellent. I have used it for lightweight (egg whites), medium weight (cookie dough) and heavy weight (kneading bread). It has performed very well and is quite powerful. My only complaint is that the button to move the head back is very stiff and difficult to use. I hope Sunbeam will fix that soon because it is a very efficient mixer otherwise.

Had an old Sunbeam mixer on which the turntable wore out. It lasted about 10 years, so I thought to go with Sunbeam again. The new one worked for almost a month before the gears stripped out on its turntable. Don’t know if its covered under warranty or not, but that is not an acceptable life on the turntable. The only work it did was to make butter from 1 quart of cream 5 or 6 days a week.

This mixer is powerful and is all I wanted in a mixer for breads and cake which is becoming a wonderful hobby for me. I recommend it highly. Oh! and the price is right.

I picked up one of these to make a birthday cake for my niece. I was visiting from another state and my Kitchen Aide wouldn’t fit it my suitcase(!), so I bought this model at a local store. What a hunk of junk! It could not mix a basic, from scratch, yellow cake batter. After wrestling with it for 3-4 times longer than it should have taken, I finally used my sister’s ancient & tiny handmixer to get the lumps out of the batter. I returned it the next day and was happy to get my money back. This is nothing like the mixer my mother used for years and years while I was growing up. Stay Away!

Well..I read the previous reviews and thought the mixer couldn’t be all that bad. I paid attention to those who had bought the “plastic” mixers and how they weren’t stable so I bought the die cast metal. The price was right,it had all the features and size bowl I wanted, and it looks so nice so i thought I’d try it. Well….I used it twice and sadly to say, it’s going back to the store.

The first time I made a batch of oatmeal cookies. Creaming the ingredients was fine, but as soon as I got the flour and oatmeal in the mix, the mixer and bowl started rocking and jerking as the mix hit the beaters. Decided I can’t turn away from that for a second! The second time was a coffee cake batter, smooth & creamy and no rocking this time, but the bowl wouldn’t spin to mix the batter. Plus then I started to get the overheated motor smell.

Not sure what I’ll get now cause I really don’t want to spend $200+ on a mixer, but this one wasn’t it.

Purchased this mixer at a close out retail store for just under seventy dollars. It was brand new, not a refurbished unit. I thought even if it lasts only a year at this price, it would be a good deal. I was wrong.

The unit came well packaged, with all of the included accessories. Two stainless mixing bowls, and two sets of hooks – one dough hook set, and set of regular beaters. The chassis is all metal while the stand upon which the bowls rest is chrome painted plastic. The unit is heavy but not so heavy it can’t be manuevered easily. So far so good…..

I used this machine ONE TIME, after which the bowl plate stopped spinning. I did not say I used it for one recipe, I mean, I used it ONE TIME, and the plate stopped working. I tried to make a very light weight egg dough. I only got through step 1, of making the sponge. 1c. flour, 2 pkgs yeast, one cup warm milk, 1/2 cup sugar. That WAS IT. Not a heavy load, not a lot of volume. The unit did not heat up and smell. The unit did not give any indication that the plate would stop working. When I got to step 2, combine 2 egg yolks, 1/4 c. milk, 1/2 c. melted shortening, and 2 cups more flour, I turned on the machine to finish mixing and the bottom plate did not move at all. I finished the recipe by manually moving the bowl around and around (that’s how light the recipe was).

I then set about troubleshooting the unit. I tried to use the smaller bowl, the other hooks, with no luck. Smaller bowl, same hoooks, no dice. I tried turning on the machine with nothing on it, or in it. Nothing doing. I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. This is going right back to the store. I will spend a little more on a mixer that is rated more highly. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT!!!

Received a model #2346 Heritage Mixmaster as a gift and tried it for the first time this morning to make dough. Looks like the gears inside stripped within the first minute. Mixer s/be okay if you need to beat eggs only…………disappointing such poor quality

This is a honey if all you want to do is make a simple cake mix. I tried creaming butter and sugar and all it does is sling everything to the sides! Thank goodness I had just bought a Kitchenaid hand mixer, I finished up my cookie dough with that and it handled that with ease! Don’t bother with this one, save up for a Kitchenaid stand mixer, that’s what I’m going to do!!

Bardwell June 9, 2010 at 2:52 pm

We also bought the Sunbeam Mixmaster based on previous experience. It is unfortunate that the new products have sacrificed quality for cost. The drive gears for the beaters are now plastic and do not hold up to moderate load (Marshmallow Creme frosting??!??). I found that it stripped the teeth right off the head of the beater drive sleeve when I investigated. Of course I cannot find the parts to repair.

The wife and I are now going to go for quality instead of this low-cost alternative.
