I really pondered upgrading my 20+ year old white KitchenAid, which still works perfectly, to this stellar red anniversary edition. The clear bowl really was the tipping point and I am so glad I did. Seeing what I am mixing in the bowl is so much nicer, and the wider mouth allows adding ingredients better.

While purchasing a new kitchen mixer may be exciting, it is often a hard decision. So many kitchen mixers are available, most with remarkable testimonials. So how do you choose which appliance is best for your kitchen? Could a KitchenAid Artisan series be the ideal fit? Here follows some pros and cons of the KitchenAid Artisan mixers.

Advantages of the KitchenAid Artisan Mixer

Big capacity - The 5 quart stainless steel bowl allows many batches to be mixed at once.

Powerful motor - Enjoy making lots of baked goods? The Kitchen Aid Artisan stand mixer can power through recipes having up to 9 cups of all-purpose flour.

Uniform mixing - A ten speed sliding control changes easily between stirring, mixing, and whipping. Since the beaters contact the bowl in 67 places, the ingredients are completely mixed.

Simple clean-up - The nylon-coated attachments and the 5 quart stand mixer stainless steel bowl are dishwasher safe. An included pouring shield keeps the ingredients in the bowl and off the counter.

Expandable - With the purchase of various add-ons, the KitchenAid Artisan series stand mixer can become a complete kitchen machine assisting in various chores such as making ice cream, stuffing sausage, and grinding meat.

Numerous colors availalbe - Color-coordinating your kitchen with a KitchenAid Artisan series stand mixer is effortless with 20 different colors.

Ease of access to the beaters and ingredients - The KitchenAid 5 Quart Artisan stand mixer is the largest capacity tilt-head stand mixer manufactured by KitchenAid.

Fail-safe warranty policy - If there are any problems in the first year, KitchenAid will replace it without any questions, delivering a new Artisan to your doorstep and arranging for the pick-up of the broken one.

Disadvantages of the KitchenAid Artisan Mixer

Space required - Owing to the tilt-head model, the KitchenAid Artisan might be unable to fit beneath your kitchen cabinet during use. Make sure you have adequate space to slide the Artisan forward on the counter when you want to use the mixer.

Insufficient power or size - The Artisan may have too small of a bowl or might not be strong enough to fulfill your needs if you regularly make large batches or use whole grain flours. KitchenAid produces two models with more power: the Pro 5 Plus and the Pro 600.

Less stability for heavier doughs - The bowl-lift machines have greater stabililty when mixing thick recipes than the tilt-head models.

Heavy-duty dough hook unavailable - The KitchenAid Artisan Series ships with a nylon-coated C dough hook rather than the PowerKnead dough hook available in the Pro 5 Plus or Pro 600 models.

Does wattage indicate power?
I have a number of Kitchenaid stand mixers, that range from 4.5 quart to 6 quart. The wattages on these mixers varies. What is most confusing is the 5 and 6 qt mixers seem to have less pure power in mixing 5 quart stand mixer than the 4.5 quart machine. This leads me to believe that the 250 watt rating of my 4.5 quart mixer has nothing to do with actual power, compared to the 325 watt rating of my 5 quart mixer, which can actually stall while mixing the exact, same amount of bread dough as the 4.5 quart. So what is the purpose of the wattage ratings if not to indicate power. Energy is not the same as power, which I believe is the purpose of indicating the number of watts.

I love the way this blade touches every part of the bowl. It cuts down on having to stop and scrape the bowl. My only drawback is the splatter it creates when you add ingredients. Overall I would recommend this blade for anyone who has a Kitchenaid.

I bought this a little over a year ago and use it constantly in my Kitchen Aid for cookies, cakes, and frostings. It really does an AMAZING job. The only down side is that it snapped apart last week! It started with a small crack at the top where the silicone meets the body. I super-glued it to get it to last until I could get another and the next time I used it, it shattered into 4 pieces!

But, I love it enough and use it enough to spring for another!

I recently purchased a pouring shield for my Kitchen Aid Pro. 500 mixer. It really helps keep spills in check when I add ingredients to my mier.

It’s great that the shield fits all model but it doesn’t tighten to the bowl. If you beat something like flour and the dough rises up and hit the shield, the shield would lift up. Basically the shield is quite loose to fit into the bowl.

It just doesn’t do it for me. It’s harder to clean than my original blade and doesn’t do any side-of-bowl swiping. I’ll just use it as an extra when I have to make more batter or buttercream and my ceramic one is in the sink. A quick switch out, yes. A total replacement, no.

I bought mine a few weeks ago and it really does scrape the bowl. Before, I had to scrape, scrape scrape, especially with cheesecake. I like that it’s so lightweight. I wish I’d bought one years ago?
So why not five stars? It does tend to make a mess, although gradually increasing the speed helps. I definitely use the pour shield (if you don’t have one, order one with this beater b/c you will regret it otherwise). Because it flings softer batters so, I still have to scrape the sides at the TOP of the bowl which is not that big a deal. It is harder to scrape all the batter off the blade itself, so a little more goes to waste. I am leery of putting it in the dishwasher b/c the rubber does look like it could get brittle. When you have a batter with a high fat content, it’s much easier to stick your blade in the dishwasher (we keep the water temp low b/c of our kids so others might not prefer the dishwasher for this), so that’s a little bit of a drawback. I would give this 4.5 stars if I could.

Save your money! I purchased this item in hopes to reduce the mess. I attached the guard (did not fit well), added my ingredients, slightly bumped the guard and it fell into the mixer bowl while it was mixing. Needless to say, it jammed my kitchen aid mixer and off-set the attachment and the bowl; I recommend using a big damp towel and cover the entire unit when you try to mix flour, powder sugar, etc. type of ingredients.

this is a great tool to have. I have meant to purchase one long ago but just never go around to it.
It works great although the fit is not secure or snug to the bowl itself.
it does however keep the confectioners sugar from flying everywhere and that is most important so I feel it does what it is supposed to do.
thanks so much for your speed and helpful website.
Diana
