I really wanted this product to do what is promised on their Amazon page and on their packaging & I thought this would be the answer to constantly having to stop my KitchenAid Artisan Mixer, pull up the head and scrape the bowl when mixing cookie dough, etc. It was NOT! I followed the instructions to move the head up so the beater blade wouldn’t be crammed down into the bowl. That didn’t work at all! It was still down too far into the bottom of the bowl and made a grinding, screeching noise. I returned it to Amazon for a refund. Only genuine KitchenAid blades work the best!

Kitchens have been in existence for many centuries and have always been used for food preparation and storage. The word kitchen derives from the Vulgar Latin cocina and the Late Latin coquina, which literally means to cook. Our modern culture however has evolved the kitchen into a major social and design element of the house, so people can prepare and eat food in style with modern kitchen appliances.

But imagine the kitchen as being a separate room in the house, used only to store food and prepare meals over an open fire using wood or charcoal. Imagine travelling to the nearest well, to fill up your buckets, carrying it all the way back home and waiting hours for it to boil up and cool down safe enough to use. Hard to imagine but this was once the world before kitchen appliances came to existence.

Cookers and Taps - A History

A kitchen appliance was introduced to the Western World between the 18th and 19th century. It was during the industrial period of the 19th century, that architects took to taking the design and function of the kitchen further, by introducing water from taps and cast iron stoves in houses.

Early 18th century industrialisation saw the advancement of technology, which meant that kitchens changed drastically in terms of incorporating new appliances such as the cast iron cooker stove. Earliest models included the Franklin stove, invented by Benjamin Franklin, a furnace stove that was intended for warming up food and not cooking.

But it was not until 1825 that the gas kitchen aid model ksm952h cooker was granted its patent, until this point, all stoves used coal or wood. Early 19th century saw the gas stoves became more popular and commonly used by most households, taking kitchens to the next level.

Not only were gas stoves being installed soon water pipes and sewers were built. Before this collecting water had consisted of a trip to the well, pump or spring every day. It was then carried in a bucket back to the house and heated up for various uses. Certainly, the tap was a major breakthrough in the kitchen design.

Refrigerator Movement

Keeping food preserved and cold was a difficult process before the immersion of refrigerators. Many people would collect ice or snow from the mountains, store them underground which was lined with wood or straw and then filled with ice or snow. This was later known as one of the first cellars in the house.

It was not until mid 19th century after refrigeration was being tried and tested in hospitals to help cool patients body temperature, that James Harrison introduced the first commercial refrigerator to brewery and meatpacking industries. This commercial refrigeration was directed mainly towards brewery's and almost all breweries used them.

However the natural ice supply became furthermore widespread, allowing it to become affordable and more accessible to the public. This became an important kitchen appliance that evidently evolved in style, size, shape and colour. Appliances at this point became a key element to the design of the kitchen and were ever changing with newer features.

Appliances as a Design

Though these inventions were primarily to make food preparation and storage simpler, efficient and convenient, it was not long before the design element would play an important role. In other words making the kitchen more organised, aesthetically appealing and homely. Catherine Beecher and her sister Harriet Beecher Stowe introduced domestic planning and kitchen layout in 1843.

Their books 'A Treatise on Domestic Economy' (1843) and 'The American Woman's Home' (1869) gave birth to the first systematic design using early ergonomics, introducing shelving on the wall, plenty of work space and designated food storage areas.

Post World War II saw women turning to their homes, becoming the key figure of maintaining the home, being mothers and evidently an important consumer to manufacturers. Kitchen appliances were rapidly increasing, introducing standard sized sinks, stoves, worktops and drawers. It very soon included electrical outputs, which were essential for usage of microwaves, blenders, toasters and mixers.

Kitchen appliances have come a long way since the early ages of using wood and coal for cooking food. Nowadays the average homeowner will also benefit from the easy storage of food and enjoy mod cons that aid in reducing cooking time. No longer is the kitchen a separate entity, intended solely for convenient food prep but also a place for entertaining guests, and showing off your modern design that match your swanky appliances.

I was surprised at how light weight it is but it works exactly as advertised without dragging or flexing. I failed to follow the instruction to check depth into the bowl before using for the first time. When I made cheesecake the sides of the bowl were perfectly scraped clean but there was a significant layer of cream cheese in the bottom of the bowl. By the time I noticed it I was too far into the recipe to try to cream it back in. It’s a real time saver in cookie and cake recipies – as long as you follow instructions for first time set up! Definitely a worthwhile tool.

Purchased this item for my wife as a gift. She has used it already, to make cookies and icing. What she likes about the beater is that it scrapes the edge of the bowl, keeping it clean and thoroughly mixing the ingredients. This is a nice attachment for the Kitchenaid mixers.

Works well but the bowl lift mixers do not have the spring that the tilt head mixers have and this effects the performance of this accessory. Without a spring to push the beater down it does not scrape the sides as clean as it should. I found a spring that fits and I’m now very happy with the performance. Kitchen Aid does not include the spring because it would be hard to keep clean. :P

I purchased this to use with my anniversary edition mixer…the one with the glass bowl.
It fits & works quite well…scraping the bowl almost too well because with a heavy dough it will get stuck from time to time!
I only wish that the attachment part was metal and not plastic considering the price paid!

Love it! Works great and no scraping. I had heard about this on NPR and it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

I am very happy so far with my Beater Blade Pro for the 6 quart model. I used it a few times so far and one time was with a thick cookie dough. I am enjoying not having to scrape down the bowl to incorporate the ingredients on the sides and very bottom of the bowl.

I have seen these units on-line for less than $10. The first one I bought at a kitchen supply store…..it broke. The next one I bought on-line for $11…..it broke. I paid $40 for this one, because the description indicated it wah “the Professional Model, and made of more durable material”……it broke. I think we may be done buying these now.

EZ Faucet is a very good product. It is well made and does and performs just like it is advertised.

Hodson May 28, 2010 at 12:54 am

Wow.. this product is very good at saving you time and money. I was skeptical at first, easy to install but it drips for a few minutes until the seal expands no problems after. Batteries are still lasting. I have had this product for a few months now and use it everyday. Look people you buy it and it will take some time to learn how to operate. Washing dishes can be a little bit tricky at first, because you have to put finger under sensor for activation. The good thing is forks and spoons are very fast and the sprayer you never use on your sink becomes very useful again. Especially useful for pots and large cans. Water is precious this is a must have product. One last thing shipping was very fast for prime users.

I have been using the Touchless EZ faucet for over 4 years. Although I am now on my third one, we love it. With an inhome childcare, it is a necessity for all the dirty little hands. So it is used 2 or 3x more than a regular household might, which is probably why they only last us a little over a year at a time. It has a button for constant flow too, which can be handy at times.

I ordered this hook quite some time ago… and got the wrong one. Even though it’s advertised as a “powerknead” hook and the picture is of the spiral hook, the part number, and in fact the hook you will receive, is the standard C-shaped hook. The difference in part number is KN256BDH (C-shaped hook – the part number in the description here) vs KNS256BDH (spiral hook – the part displayed in the picture, but not the part number in the description) – THE “S” IS ESSENTIAL or you will get the wrong one. DON’T order this one assuming you will get the spiral hook. I tried to get them to exchange it numerous times – the return shipping label was always “on it’s way” – finally I gave up and I’m stuck with a hook I don’t want and already have one of (my machine came with a C hook, but I find the spiral hook works much better) – I’ll just have to try get rid of it elsewhere I suppose…

Knapp May 30, 2010 at 12:47 am

As mentioned by a previous reviewer (whose counsel I wish I had believed), the item described on this page is not what will be shipped by Small Appliance. The description is for the spiral dough hook, but they will ship you the C-shaped dough hook instead. Caveat emptor.

Noj May 30, 2010 at 12:14 pm

The spiral dough hook is swell. Works much better than the “C”-shaped hook that comes with the mixer. My one caution… sometimes buying the spiral hook can be frustrating as what differentiates the spiral hook’s part number from the normal hook’s part number is an ‘S’ in the part number. I was twice sent the wrong part! (It was correctly packaged and labled – they just kept pulling the wrong item.) Once I got the right part I was delighted with the way it handles dough. It’s much less likely to allow the dough to climb the hook as it’s being worked – the spiral keeps pushing the dough back down. Nice. Also this design handles stiff doughs better than the “C” hook. Seems to ‘knead’ it as opposed to ‘bang’ it. Nice addition if you’re into bread.
